Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Celtic and Rangers “have to” agree a deal to return full allocations of away fans to Old Firm games before the 2024-25 campaign starts.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the clubs “have to find a way to make football the winner”.
In March, the SPFL confirmed that Celtic and Rangers have agreed a deal to provide ticket allocations of “around 5%” to away fans for Old Firm games – starting next season.
Derby matches have had very small and even zero away allocations following a move from the Gers in 2018 which saw ticket numbers cut.
The agreement means around 2,500 Celtic fans will visit Ibrox next season, while 3,000 Rangers supporters will be in attendance at Celtic Park.
Wyness wants return to full away ends at Celtic and Rangers games
But previously, around 7,000 away fans were permitted entry – and Wyness called for a return to that stance to preserve the “beauty” of the Old Firm.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We all know that there’s nothing like the atmosphere at an Old Firm game.
“Those of us who have been lucky enough to experience it know how special it is.
“Hampden Park will be a cauldron on Saturday.
“Rangers and Celtic have got to find a way to agree and get away fans back into the grounds.
“They have to.
“We know the problems and the hatred between the two clubs, it’s gone on for years.

“But that is just a reality, and we have to find a way to make football the winner – we want the atmosphere to be special.
“An Old Firm game is a thing of beauty and it should be maintained.”
